Roc Ordman
Alfred B. "Roc" Ordman (born October 25, 1948〔) is an American biochemist and researcher into aging, life extension and the effects of free radicals on the body.
He is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin.
He was a visiting Professor of Biochemistry, Rush Medical College, a private university in Chicago, Illinois.
He has recommended that adults get 500 mg of Vitamin C twice per day to achieve the highest level that can be maintained in the blood serum.〔"Rate of Excretion of Vitamin C in Human Urine", G. King, M. Beins, J. Larkin, B. Summers, and A. B. Ordman, AGE 17:87-92 (1994)〕 This is a level far above official recommendations and for which he now holds patents 〔Patent Number 5,932,226, Ordman, A. B., "Method and kit for determining the optimum dosage level of physiologically useful substances", Issued August 3, 1999〕
.〔Patent Number 5,783,150, Ordman, A. B., "A Test Kit For Determining The Level of Ascorbic Acid in a Patient's Body" Issued July 21, 1998〕 His study published in 2006 demonstrated how a combination of 500 mg of vitamin C taken twice a day and 400 IU of vitamin E once a day protects a person from many forms of damage from free radicals 〔"Design for a study to determine optimal dosage of ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol in humans", Moser, L. R. and A. B. Ordman, AGE 28: 77-84(2006)〕 ().
Another study he conducted used a process known as nutrient signaling to develop a nutraceutical treatment that may cause weight loss. The process uses signals from supplements of branched chain amino acids, oleic acid, and DHA (a component of fish oil) to signal the brain and adipose tissue to cause weight loss. A double-blind clinical trial in a 2-week pilot study was consistent with the hypothesis this may facilitate weight reduction in people. The peer-reviewed article was published in the ''Journal of the American Aging Association'' in 2008.〔"Pilot Study for an age and gender-based nutrient signaling system for weight control", A.B. Ordman, AGE 30(2): 201-8 (2008)〕()
Since retiring, he is involved in two studies. 1) To prevent the recurrence of superficial bladder carcinoma, which is the major form of bladder cancer. He conducted a clinical trial at Beloit College to determine the oral dosage of vitamin C that creates the highest concentration of vitamin C in the bladder. That concentration is high enough to kill cancer cells. This was published in the Journal of Cancer Therapy in 2015.〔"Two Grams BID is an Oral Dosage of Vitamin C to Reduce the Risk of Recurrence of Superficial Bladder Carcinoma", Folk, E., Downs, T., Ordman, A.B., J. Cancer Therapy 6, 169-176 (2015)〕 (). This ongoing research was presented at the Linus Pauling Institute in 2013 〔Poster 175, "Clinical Trial to Find An Oral Dosage of Vitamin C That May Prevent Recurrence of Superficial Bladder Carcinoma" Folk, E., Downs, T., Ordman, A.B.〕 (). 2) Another trial he is conducting may reduce the level of protein misfolding, which may be the fourth cause of human aging (). In the Teaberry Trial (), volunteers consume blueberries followed by a cup of green tea. The combination elevates and sustains the level of EGCG in the serum, which is likely to reduce the level of errors when mRNA is translated. This research was presented 〔poster 173 The Teaberry Trial Testing The Translational Infidelity Theory of Aging, Ordman A. and Martin R.〕 () at the Linus Pauling Institute in 2015.
He maintains a website, NutritionInvestigator.org () summarizing peer-reviewed nutrition research. A bimonthly newsletter is available 〔"Nutrition Newsletter", Roc Ordman〕 () with links to published research.
Professor Ordman lives in Monticello, Green County, Wisconsin, USA. His current hobbies, that he believes are useful to maintain a healthy life after age 65, include yoga, meditation, and karate. He is also a lifelong stamp collector.
